# Code Chats to Content

> Code Chats to Content is an AI agent skill for Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, and other agents that read SKILL.md. Mines a quarter of your Copilot chats for the problems worth writing about. Best for: export Copilot chat history.

- Category: Research and knowledge
- Built by: Atharva Shah (https://atharvashah.com)
- Requirements: Needs a paid Claude plan with Claude Code, Python, and saved GitHub Copilot Chat history in VS Code. It reads Copilot Chat sessions only, so chats from other assistants need a custom setup. Outlines are drafts for you to write from, not finished posts.

## Your old Copilot chats already hold next quarter's posts.

Once a quarter it copies your VS Code Copilot Chat history, pulls out the real coding problems you solved, and writes 25 detailed content outlines from them. Every idea comes from work you did.

## What it produces

- **The article series.** Your Copilot history turns into a connected series of technical posts, each rooted in a problem you solved. ![A knowledge graph of the Copilot article series, with draft titles such as The JSX Debugging Spiral circled in red.](https://atharvashah.com/ai-skills/code-chats-to-content/scene-1.webp)
- **From bug to draft.** One messy debugging session becomes a draft with the errors, the fixes, and the lesson in order. ![The draft The JSX Debugging Spiral. 6 Errors, 6 Fixes, Zero Tests, with its cover and opening paragraph, from a real Copilot session.](https://atharvashah.com/ai-skills/code-chats-to-content/scene-2.webp)
- **Drafts with covers.** Each outline grows into a titled draft you can finish and publish in your own voice. ![Five article covers fanned out, all drafts grown from one Copilot chat history, from bug lists to a full SEO audit.](https://atharvashah.com/ai-skills/code-chats-to-content/scene-3.webp)

## If you code with Copilot, you already did the research.

You set the paths once. Every quarter goes through the same three steps.

1. **It copies your chat history.** It copies the saved Copilot Chat session files from VS Code into your notes folder, so the originals stay untouched.
2. **It finds the real problems.** It keeps the coding questions and answers from the quarter and drops the small talk. A report shows what you worked on most.
3. **Get 25 outlines.** Each outline covers the problem, what you tried, what worked, and the screenshots to capture. Then it locks itself for three months.

## The usual options give you ideas nobody needs.

Idea generators repeat the internet. Scrolling old chats by hand never happens.

### Code Chats to Content

- **From your history.** Every outline starts from a problem you solved.
- **Detailed outlines.** Problem, attempts, fix, and the screenshots to take.
- **A quarterly rhythm.** A date gate keeps runs three months apart.
- **Stays local.** Your chats are copied into your own folder.

### AI idea generators

- **Generic topics.** You get the same ten listicles as everyone else.
- **No proof.** The ideas come with no problem you actually solved.
- **No screenshots.** You have nothing to show because nothing happened.
- **Easy to spot.** Readers can tell you never did the work.

### Scrolling old chats

- **Hundreds of sessions.** The history is too long to read by hand.
- **Hidden files.** The chats sit in an app data folder you never open.
- **Lost context.** By the time you look, you forgot why it mattered.
- **Never finished.** The idea list stays a note to self.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I download my Copilot chat history?

VS Code stores Copilot chat sessions in its workspace storage folder. This skill copies those files, parses both formats, and keeps the coding questions and answers.

### What content ideas work for developers?

Problems you actually solved make the strongest posts. The skill ranks the bugs and fixes in your chat history and writes an outline for each one.

### Which Claude plan do I need?

A paid plan with Claude Code, because it reads files from your machine. Pro is enough for one quarterly run.

### What else do I pay for?

Nothing extra. It runs on Python. You need GitHub Copilot in VS Code only because that is where the chat history comes from.

### Which chat history does it read?

GitHub Copilot Chat sessions that VS Code saves on your machine. It does not read Cursor, ChatGPT, or Claude chats out of the box.

### Why only once a quarter?

A three-month gap gives each run a full quarter of new problems. If you run it early, it refuses and changes nothing.

### Does it send my code anywhere?

The copy and extraction run on your machine. Claude reads the extracted questions and answers through your normal Claude plan when it writes the outlines.

### Does it write the finished posts?

No. It writes detailed outlines with the problem, the attempts, the fix, and the screenshots to capture. You write the post in your voice.

### Will it include private or client code?

It can, because it reads everything you asked Copilot. Review each outline and remove anything under an NDA before you publish.

### How many chats do I need?

A few dozen sessions over a quarter is enough for useful outlines. More history gives it more problems to pick from.

### What if the first batch is not great?

Keep the outlines with a clear before and after, and skip the rest. The intelligence report also shows themes you can outline yourself.

### Does this skill work with Gemini CLI, Codex, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot?

Yes, with one caveat. The skill is a SKILL.md folder in the Agent Skills open standard, which Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot all load. It is built and tested on Claude Code. Steps that lean on Claude-only features, such as parallel subagents, run one after another or need a manual step in other agents.

### How do I install an agent skill?

Copy the skill folder into your agent's skills directory: ~/.claude/skills for Claude Code, or the skills folder your agent documents for Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, Cursor, or Copilot. The agent reads the description and loads the skill when your request matches it. Each skill ships with a setup guide for any tool it needs.
